Over 100 Families Receive Certificates of Comfort and Statutory Leases
The Honourable Major General (Ret’d) Edmund Dillon, Minister of Housing and Urban Development, today, presented Certificates of Comfort and Statutory Leases to over one hundred (100) eligible squatters.
A Certificate of Comfort is a unique instrument issued by the Land Settlement Agency in accordance with the Act. It gives the recipient an assurance that he or she will not be removed from the plot on which his/her dwelling stands, unless it is deemed necessary for him/her to be relocated and an alternative plot is identified and made available. The Statutory Lease gives an interest derived from the Act, No. 25 of 1998, thus providing the Statutory Lease holder with a maximum of thirty (30) years to pay for the land. This is in keeping with the Ministry’s mandate to facilitate home ownership to the most vulnerable within the society.
The feature address was delivered by the Hon. Major General (Ret’d) Edmund Dillon. Also speaking at today’s event were Member of Parliament for Toco/Sangre Grande Mrs. Glenda Jennings-Smith, Chairman of the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation Mr Terry Rondon, Chairman of the Land Settlement Agency Mr. Ossley Francis and Chief Executive Officer of the Land Settlement Agency Mr Hazar Hosein.
